Amusing quote from Greg Garber's espn.com article.

"On Thursday, the house, which has been a rallying point for angry demonstrators, carried a different message.

Five signs taped together to the wrought-iron work on the front landing read, "Innocent Until Proven Guilty."

Another read, "ALLEDGED: Represented as existing or as being as described, but not so proved; supposed."

The source for the definition was listed as www.dictionary.com, and that online source presumably wasn't responsible for the first "D." Apparently at Duke, where the average SAT verbal scores fall between 690 and 770, not everyone has a command of spelling."

Reposting an analysis from the comments on a previous post that got formatted like dick

Some of my favorite quotes:

On Wednesday night this week, a caller to WUNC's public radio
program, "The State of Things," said that Duke treats the town like
a plantation.

At Thursday's open forum, a Duke student, who declined to be
named, said she worked at a local soup kitchen.

"You know what the soup kitchen folks think of Duke?" she asked
with emotion. " 'Duke s---- on Durham! We hate Duke! "

I get a little bit of humor out of that, the idea that we shit on Durham. If by shit on, you mean sustain the local economy be responsible for the revitalization of the area surrounding east campus, then yes, we shit on Durham real good! Duke employs 15% of all people in durham, pays out over 3/4 of a Billion dollars a year in wages, and has a $2.6 Billion impact on the local economy (source: http://www.dukechronicle.com/media/storage/paper884/news/2004/02/13/News/Universitys.Impact.On.Durham.Hits.2.6b-1467905.shtml?norewrite200603312333)

The players have first names like Breck and Gibbs and Reade, and
most of them attended prep schools. In fact, 26 of the 47 players
come from the states of Connecticut, New York and New Jersey, which
annually are among the highest-income-per-capita states.

Wow, I didn't realize you could judge so much about a person based upon their name and their home state. Some would call that prejudice...

On Tuesday, the Raleigh News & Observer broke the story that 15 of
the players -- nearly a third of the team -- had been charged in
recent months with misdemeanors following drunken and disruptive
behavior. For a variety of reasons, most escaped criminal
convictions.

Oh No!!! Public Urination?!? You are right, it is an abomination that anyone should escape criminal conviction for such a violation of basic shrubbery rights.

One of the T-shirts at a vigil on Wednesday bore this message: "Get
a conscience, not a lawyer." So far, the perception on campus is
that most players have ignored that advice. Most of them have
retained the services of attorneys.

In a situation like this, I too probably would not want to retain the right to legal console.

If these assaults are coming from the best and brightest of Duke,
it's clear there's something significant going on here that needs to be addressed."

If the Lacrosse team is our best and brightest, God help us all...

This has no longer has any more to do with the events of the night than ALE diligently patrolling campus has to do with law enforcement..

Yes, the misspelling is embarassing (but in light of all that is going on, it doesn't seem all too important and why the writer felt the need to include it in his story is beyond me, other than to score some cheap points). But what I think is worth noting is that he assumes, as most people do, that this was written and put up by a Duke student. Surely no one Durhamite would have posted it because (and I'm guessing here) the vast majority have already made up their minds about this situation. Durham, think Duke mistreats you? How do you treat the hand that feeds you?

Gang Violence against duke!

Despite Larrys email, we all know the local Bloods and Crips we will be out in full force. I am shit, there has already been two documentaries on the gang violence probelm in Durham. Unlike major cities that are sectioned off into "good" and "bad" areas. Durham is much more open. Just saying watch your back out there....

Now Nifong is saying that if the DNA doesn't match, he won't press charges. This case is never gonna make it inside a courtroom.

Unless he already found out the DNA matches and is just letting the tension build til he swoops into Duke in a surprise attack and is like "BAM! THE DNA'S BACK - WHERE'S THE DURHAMITES WITH THEIR PANS CAUSE YOU'RE ALL GONNA FRY!"

Where did he say that without the dna he won't press charges? I think that's sensible, given that the woman seems to have no clue who her "attackers" were (other than that they were white), but a day or so ago he was saying that the dna isn't necessary.. what were his words.. oh yeah. "What did we do before we had DNA? We relied on victim identification." If, though, the woman was lying, I think at some point she might pick three to accuse; otherwise she has no way to get a payout.

Um, there was a news story today where he was quoted as saying that . . . in typical duke student fashion i'm too lazy to find it.

The player's lawyers and a player's mother apparently put up the signs, as well as getting the house professionally cleaned inside and outside. I dont think this case will see the courtroom regardless of the DNA. They will either settle or no charges will be filed.

it was not the lawyers who put up the "alledged" posters. it was a group of guys from the houses that around 610. all those guys on that street are friends.

Well, I saw on wral that he's decided to definitely not release the dna. But who knows, the lawyers may leak the news if it's negative.

http://www.wral.com/news/8413546/detail.html

"Durham District Attorney Mike Nifong has said that anyone who has information about what happened and who does not cooperate with investigators could face charges for aiding and abetting.

Nifong also said that any charges in connection with the case would not be filed until at least the week of April 10. He also said he would neither announce the DNA results that were expected back from a State Bureau of Investigation lab next week nor announce any evidence before a trial."

He's hoping, I suppose, that someone on the team will admit to what "really happened."

Wouldn't it be funny to set up a few sand-bagged "fox holes" on the lawns of student houses? Someone do this please. Sand and razor wire are really cheap and I promise your handy-work would make the associated press news wire.
